The Quorndon Embroidery Club
The embroidery members are from an embroidery course which is part of the Rawlins Community Programme. The course of Embroidery & Design at Rawlins ran on Thursday mornings from 9.30 until 11.30 a.m.
It was while we were on this course that we read about the project for the 102 panels to record the 20th century in embroidery. Mrs. Lavinia Earl, the project organiser, from Poole in Dorset accepted a group of us to design and embroider one of the panels. The year 1919 was selected for us. The research was interesting. A few people in addition to course members were interested in presenting parts of the panel. We had a lot of difficulties in combining the various pieces but with hard work from everyone involved the panel was achieved and most of us really enjoyed it. Notes about the individual pieces for the 1919 panel has been collected by one of the members.
We think the War Child is a worthy cause and because of our enjoyment a group of us offered to design and work on another panel. This time it will be 1904. The design has already been completed and various pieces for embroidering have been selected by the members of the group. The group that is now involved in the war child embroidery is working independently of the Rawlins course. We have not really agreed on a name, but have designed a logo and the name Quern Embroidery Group is being thought about. (I understand there are other embroidery groups working in Quorn).

THE 1919 WAR CHILD
EMBROIDERY
by
RAWLINS ADULT EMBROIDERY CLASS
A Short History
This work has been produced by members of the Embroidery group, under the capable
direction of tutor Marion Elsom. The group has undertaken to produce one of the 102 panels
which will eventually be joined together to make up this magnificent record of the 20th
century, including local, national and international events. The first panel will
detail the reasons and aims of the embroidery and the last will have a picture of the
world with children of all races dancing around it and holding hands, indicating peace and
harmony!!
The Quorn group has produced a large
panel showing events from the-year 1919. It measures about six feet by eight feet and
members have researched and designed their own section of the panel. Eventually, when all
the panels are joined, funds from the display of the finished embroidery will be used for
the work of the War Child Charity.
The project organiser is Mrs. Lavinia Earl from Poole in Dorset. She would be pleased to
hear from any embroidery groups who would like to take part in the project. Please ask if
you would like details of how to contact her.
