Music for a summer evening.
The grounds of Beaumanor Hall once again provided an
excellent venue for this year's open air concert, held on Saturday July 15th. This is now
the sixth year that the concerts have been staged. Either the advertising has improved
year on year, or the news is out that this is one event not to be missed. The concert was
a sell out; 1753 tickets sold. Judging by the cars in the car park, and the absence of
unoccupied 'pitches', the cool weather was not going to deter.
The concerts are organised by The Royal British Legion Quorn Branch by their stalwart organising committee of Geoffrey Gibson, MBE, Robert Beardsley, Bill Sykes, Peter Towers and John Unwin. The proceeds of the concert being divided equally between: -
The Royal British Legion's 2000 Poppy Appeal
The
Royal Navy Benevolent Trust
The
Army Benevolent Fund
The
Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund
The Leicester Symphony Orchestra were back for their third appearance, this time under the baton of Paul Hilliam, with soprano Alessandra Testai leading the choral interludes (when will they print the words in the programme?), the Fanfare Trumpeters of the Coldstream Guards starting the programme, and Reverend Howard Ketton acting as 'presenter'.
The old favourites were there, although what an Italian singer thinks of 'Rule Britannia' and all that flag waving I'll never know. And where else would you see four generations 'bopping' to Elgar? As always the 1812 Overture with fireworks finished the event of with a bang.
Our thanks go to Barry and Lynn Price for supplying us with these photographs of the event.
