20th September 2017 [Wednesday] - TODAY
Quorn Bacon Roll Day
11.00am to 1.00pm - Odd John's Kitchen, 10-12 High St., Quorn

10 years of rolling out the bacon ... are you up for the challenge!

Once again the Quorn air will be full of the delicious aromas of bacon, onions, herbs, suet pastry ( and perhaps some little secret ingredient) as contestants descend on Odd John’s Kitchen on High Street clutching their lovingly prepared Quorn Bacon Rolls.

Faced with the task this year of deciding on the best Quorn Bacon Roll will be the Mayor of Charnwood (Cllr. Pauline Ranson), Maurice Flynn (BBC East Midlands Today presenter) and keeping a professional eye on things as chair of judges will be chef Darren Ellison of Odd John’s Kitchen.

This year’s challenge is the 10th Annual Quorn Bacon Roll Day, so we do need a good list of entries to make up a worthwhile competition and entries from other villages are most welcome. The prize is a £25 voucher for Odd John’s Kitchen and every contestant receives a £5 Bradley’s voucher.

If you require any further information / recipe / entry form etc, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Terry Stirling, (01509-414287, e.mail terrystirling@ntlworld.com)

Bacon Roll Day is supported by Quorn Parish Council and Odd John’s Kitchen and is an Old School Trust Community Heritage event.

Il commissario Montalbano. An Illustrated talk in english by David Lamb
7pm until 9pm - Quorn Village Hall

Event organised by the Dante Alighieri Society of Loughborough.
The series of detective stories, based on books by Andrea Camilleri was first broadcast by the BBC in 2012. The action is centred on Vigata, a fictional town in southeast Sicily. The scenes are however, filmed mostly around Ragusa, with many shots also of Marina di Ragusa, Scicli and the Castello di Donnafugata. Montalbano's flat is by the lighthouse of Punta Secca. The titles of the episodes are confusing, eg 'The Terracotta Dog', reflecting Camilleri's love of intriguing poetic lines, but giving away nothing about the plot. There are some 30 episodes, some of which are available on DVD sets. This one hour talk by David Lamb, presents the plot of two or three episodes and a brief visual guided tour of the actual locations in Sicily. He has also planned a guided tour holiday, themed on these locations, and other sites of interest, in Sicily, organised by a respected tour company.
Venue: Quorn Village Hall, 64 Leicester Road Quorn, Leicestershire, LE12 8BB
Cost: Free for members, £3 for non members. Tea, coffee and biscuits included.

Local composer, John Middleton, has composed and engineered a soundtrack using real orchestral instruments. Although the music may be innovative, it is tuneful!

Between the four movements will be opportunities to ask questions and hear about the process.

The Blackbird is John's 4th symphony and he has had an opera and an oratorio performed in Loughborough.

The Schmoozenbergs in Concert
7.30pm (doors 7.00pm) - Quorn Village Hall

Reviews - The Schmoozenbergs in Concert

‘The large and enthusiastic audience, which incidentally, covered just about the entire age range, simply lapped it up.’ - Promoter

The Schmoozenbergs are a gypsy jazz quartet, bringing you an upbeat slice of 1930s Paris. With two duelling guitars, a violin, and a double bass, they bring irresistible rhythms and jaunty melodies to create a heart-warming, hip-swinging sound. Paying homage to the pioneers of the genre, the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and the French violinist Stéphane Grappelli, their repertoire includes interpretations of their timeless compositions, as well as pieces by the likes of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and George Gershwin. A light-hearted show, containing catchy tunes, intricate musical interplay and playful improvisation, this will put a smile on the faces of young and old alike.
Seating will be cabaret style and you are invited to bring your own drinks and glasses.

The FB Pocket Orchestra in Concert
7.30pm (doors 7.00pm) - Quorn Village Hall

Review of The FB Pocket Orchestra in Concert -

‘Atmospheric, yet vibrant, the style, glamour and ‘fabulousness’ of this era is captured beautifully ’ Jazz FM

Working backwards from the 1930s, the FB Pocket Orchestra explores the repertoire that formed the embryo of what is now known as popular music.

The members originally began playing together simply as an exercise in exploring heritage repertoire – taking on a few informal performances and recording dates as schedules allowed.

The FBPO became an ‘official’ project in the spring of 2012 and released its first album in October. The aims of the orchestra are to present a contemporary slant on popular acoustic music from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Seating will be cabaret style and you are invited to bring your own drinks and glasses.

Alma in Concert
7.30pm (doors 7pm) - Quorn Village Hall

review - Alma in Concert.....

Alma were spot-on...the band were completely tight from the first note and continued to take their audience on a whistle-stop tour of European folk dances’ (fRoots Magazine)
_____________________________________________

Alma bring together award winning fiddlers John Dipper (English Acoustic Collective) and Emily Askew (Askew Sisters) with guitarist Adrian Lever (Arhai).

Inspired by fiddle traditions from England and across the world, at the heart of Alma's music is the joyful sound of fiddles playing in harmony nurtured by the sensitive and driving accompaniment of guitar. Alma’s distinctive approach to the gems of each tradition result in beautiful and exciting new arrangements, which tantalise and excite the audience.

Each member of Alma brings their own individual style and influences to the band:

John’s work with Chris Wood in the English Acoustic Collective, ground-breaking string quartet Methera, Patterson Dipper, and Dipper Malkin.

Emily’s extensive experience in early music (playing with The Dufay Collective, Shakespeare’s Globe and at Glyndebourne) as well as her work on the folk scene with The Askew Sisters and the Elizabethan Session.

Adrian’s knowledge of Eastern European music developed through his work with Arhai and Horses Brawl.
2016 saw the release of debut album Varieties on Rootbeat Records. This received rave reviews and airplay on many radio stations.

The Cory Seznec Band - New Music from the Old
7.30pm (doors 7pm) - Quorn Village Hall

Reviews - The Cory Seznec Band.....

‘Loose, jazz, old-time, bluegrass, it, African melange that seems to come from a deep well of the collective unconsciousness… at its core this is fun, toe-tapping music, equally at home on a summer’s afternoon or blowing the winter blues away.’ (R2 Magazine)
________________________________________

Corentin “Cory” Seznec is a Franco-American musician living in Paris, France. A multicultural household, extensive travels and musical encounters, and a passion for history exposed Cory to sounds from around the world, helping him to develop his own distinct style that reflects his broad interests. Cory focuses on fingerstyle guitar, clawhammer banjo, voice, harmonica, and an array of other instruments. A founding member of Groanbox and Seznec Bros, Cory also helped create the Sawmill Sessions, an Old-Time and Bluegrass collective in Paris. A resident of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for 3.5 years, he was active in two bands MistO-MistO and Damakase, which mix Ethiopian music with other African styles. In July 2016, Cory embarked on a trip with filmmaker Gonzalo Guajardo to Luhya country in western Kenya to make a documentary on some of the few remaining omutibo style guitar players. In October 2016, Cory recorded a video lesson of some of his arrangements of New Orleans-infused fingerstyle guitar for Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop (released early 2017). He is currently finishing his second studio album at Tonehouse Studios outside Paris.
