Quorn May Day Celebrations

A’ Maying in Quorn

Older members of the Quorn community can remember the days when, every year, the village would hold its annual May Day Carnival. The last time anyone can recall such an event was 1953! Yet records prove that dancing around the maypole dates back several hundreds of years. There is every reason to suspect that some kind of springtime festivity has been held in Quorn for most of this millennium.

Dancing the Maypole It seemed right therefore, that the Quorn 2000 group should consider re-establishing a May Day event for the community.

Quorn 2000 is a group of enthusiastic villagers who got together at the request of the Parish Council to co-ordinate and organise activities to allow the Quorn community to celebrate and commemorate the birth of the new millennium.

Face painting with style! A May Day event was suggested and proved very popular when the group undertook a survey of villagers’ opinions in The Quorndon Magazine last year. So, the May Day Carnival was re-born.

On these pages you will see that the event proved extremely popular with all sections of the community. Around 1500 people turned out on a beautiful spring day to watch the parade and join in the fun.

The response has shown that such a carnival must continue as an annual event well into the next millennium!
