With the festival about to start,
all preparations made, the nail-biting commences. Will folk come? Will the bands turn up?
Will there be enough helpers?
With nearly £6000 committed, the investment was high and budgets tight for this annual
village celebration. The low recovery means things could have gone badly wrong. The
planning started 12 months ago but the beers could not be selected by CAMRA until the end
of August, when the Champion of Great Britain Beers had been judged.
The bands are always good having been sampled at other venues and with good
reports. Rawlins provided their new as yet un-named band for the warm up on Friday. They
were very good, displaying a great deal of talent.
The public turnout was excellent and lived up to previous years, in fact we could not have
coped with many more people. But it was nail-biting to the end because it was very
sobering (pun) to realise that it wasnt until the last couple of hours of the last
day that the event broke even.
For all those disappointed to see the "sold out" sign going up on successive
barrels of the beers, the skill and objective is to run out of all beer at Time
call on Saturday night. Anything left in the opened barrels is wasted profit and
goes down the drain.
Relief! A modest profit was made, but the amount won't be known until the unsold bottles
and barrels are credited but it is expected to be in the order of £500.This will be used
to support any community village hall event or production, either in terms of equipment,
or to ensure that organisers are not left with a financial loss after investing their time
and effort for the benefit of our community.
If you feel inclined to stage an event but are reluctant to undertake the financial risk,
