Quorn Open Gardens 2000 took place on July 1st and 2nd 2000 and was organised by Tim Harrison and Ivan Bexon. This year, twenty four gardens and exhibitions were open to the public, and hundreds of people braved the weather to walk around the village.

Saturday was slightly wet, but was nothing compared to Sunday. Although weather on the second day was good to start off with, black clouds moved in quickly and the village was soon subjected to torrential rain followed by hail. Many people sought refuge in garages, greenhouses and conservatories. Teas and coffees were served as people looked through steamy glass for an opening in the weather. When it came, people moved out again, but plants in many gardens were all but destroyed by the heavy rain and hail.

Flash floods hit the village centre and one pub became flooded throughout. The photo shows Kate Hutchinson with a small frozen offering that fell in her Meeting Street garden.

Profits from this event go towards Village Greening - small scale environmental projects to improve Quorn Village. Despite the weather it is hoped that the amount raised will be between £1000 and £2000.

We cannot hope to do this event justice here with just a few photographs. What we hope to achieve is a snapshot of the day to give those who went a reminder of what they saw, and to show those who could not come along what they missed.
