Betty Garton
Upon leaving School I went to Loughborough College of Art to take the City and Guilds Dress Design course.
After a year, I was able to obtain an assignment with a Ladies Fashion Company working along with two other designers in Leicester.
Emigrated to Canada in 1960 where I became a sales rep. for Helena Rubinstein Cosmetics, having been interviewed by Madame (as she liked to be known) in New York.
Driving 26000 miles per year gave me an insight into the different aspects of merchandising in all areas. I was invited to attend Product Packaging meetings re design for same along with "schools" for Helena Rubinstein Cosmeticians in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
A great challenge involving long and gratifying days, but also some super parties en-route!
Henceforth the creativity which I had lost for a period of time before emigrating returned, and to this day collage is my favourite medium.
