Quorn Wins Best Large Village Accolade
August 2004
On Saturday 7th August Lady Martin, on behalf of The Rural Community
Council and sponsors The Leicester Mercury and Calor, presented Quorn
with the award of Best Large Village in Leicestershire. In her speech,
Lady Martin highlighted the following aspects of the village which
led to this success:
‘The competition was looking for entries from vibrant communities
that take care of themselves, their residents and their facilities,
not villages that are just pretty.
Quorn residents have proved themselves to be worthy winners,
with their protection of ecological sites, also making use of
the environment
for leisure activities by providing evening ‘bat walks’,
Quorn Walks and Parish Walks.
The scouts join in and willingly help with litter picks and the
village has a wealth of volunteer wardens who keep things looking
nice.
Information and communication is strong in the village and residents
have the benefit of ‘The Quorndon’ distributed free to
every household as well as village and parish web pages and noticeboards.
The judges were impressed that a large village can still maintain
its sense of community.
The prize goes to Quorn residents because they have again shown
the Rural Community Council’s judges how much they care about
their village and how capable they are of being proactive in taking
pride in their community places and the quality of life of the inhabitants.
I hope that the cheque for £250 that you will receive will
be able to help you to enhance your community still further and that
you will display the plaques given by sponsors The Leicester Mercury
and Calor with pride for years to come.’
