As activities are speeding up in preparation for the submission of the Parks for People Stage 2 bid in September, people with strange-looking devices have recently been seen on the Stafford Orchard. These are archaeologists from AS&C Ltd, a consultancy in Milton Keynes which won the contract to explore the park for buried history.
As part of the bid process, and to satisfy planning requirements, an archaeological investigation must be carried out to a) discover whether any archaeology is present and b) if there is, to work out the best means of preserving it when the redevelopment of the park starts.
The photos show the project manager, Alastair Hancock in the process of carrying out the geophysical survey. The data collected will enable him to pinpoint where the most likely sites of interest are. Trial trenches will then take place and if further investigation might prove fruitful, then the lottery team will arrange a community dig, where a small number of villagers (probably on a first come, first served basis) will be invited to take part under the supervision of the archaeologists.
