Ivan is a retired Chartered Mining Engineer. He was born near Kimberley, Nottinghamshire (the home of Hardy’s and Hanson’s Kimberley Ales – his grandfather was the chief engineer at the brewery and his father was for many years the landlord of one of their pubs). Ivan attended a Nottingham grammar school before going on to Leeds University to study Mining Engineering. At Leeds he met, and later married, his wife Gillian.

After graduating, Ivan joined the Coal Research Laboratories located in old film studios in west London (the African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, was the last film made there). Oddly, the laboratories were about as far from a coal mine as it was possible to get - eventually somebody noticed this and in the late 1960s the whole organisation moved to Burton-on-Trent.

Ivan spent the next 24 years developing computer technology for mine automation, consulting and lecturing in eastern and western Europe, the USA, Russia, China and Australia, supervising European Coal and Steel Community research projects, and managing various parts of British Coal’s technical services organisation.

The Bexons moved to The Dower House in Quorn in 1986, planning to stay put. Both daughters attended Rawlins and went on to university. Ivan became a governor of the college, initially as a parent and then as a Leicestershire Education Authority appointee. He retired from British Coal in 1993 and quickly immersed himself in local issues – as a trustee for Abbeyfield and as a Parish Councillor. Leisure activities include travel, theatre, DIY, the New Quorndon Shakespeare Company and golf.

As a councillor, Ivan’s particular interest is the preservation and development of Quorn’s character and village identity – specifically its architecture, environment, historical heritage, and conservation area. He keeps an eye on the Council’s finances, chairing its Finance Committee, and also serves on its Environment Committee.

He is not a member of any political party and firmly believes that politics should play no part in parish policy or decision-making. The Plan for Quorn originally drafted by Ivan is a reflection of this.
