Joan Parkinson
On completion of an art course at Loughborough College of Art I was fortunate enough to obtain a post as a trainee in a large studio of an advertising agency. I specialised in figure drawing at this stage and my work was used in local and national media including fashion magazines (ie Vogue).
After working as a freelance artist, I changed
my career and worked as a school caretaker/cleaner followed by fifteen years as a youth
and community worker. During this time I was able to involve teenagers and young children
in many art projects, including designing and painting large murals in community centres,
and poster design.
In 1993 I retired from community work and returned to the art field!
I now specialise in portraits (including children), landscapes, houses, greeting cards and B/W illustrations. Also I paint on silk (men's ties and women's scarves), glass painting and murals.
I teach art to a group of adults (part-time) at a local community centre.
In 1996 I started a village sketch club and
the response was excellent from both beginners and experienced artists. We meet
fortnightly during Spring and Summer months and visit various local venues for sketching
sessions. During the winter months we have an evening art workshop with either a
demonstration and talk by a well-know local artist or sketching a live model and also
still life painting.
