Quorn Folk Dance Club

Quorn Folk Dance Club logo Welcome to the Quorn Folk Dance Club Website. We are based in Quorn in Leicestershire in the East Midlands and we meet weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm - 9.30pm in Quorn Village Hall. We often dance to live music, different callers come along and give instruction on the movements in each dance.

The Club has the order of 50 members and new dancers are encouraged to join in: there is no need to bring a partner as lone dancers can come along and join in as well as couples. The age range is wide and the aim of the Club is to make the evenings fun and sociable whilst dancers enjoy the music and the exercise. New dancers, experienced or inexperienced, are always made most welcome.

Folk Dancing - Quorn Folk Dance Club The Club began as an evening class back in 1970 when community education first came to Leicestershire. By 1976 the class had evolved into a Club run by a committee and it still has a few members today who were dancers at that first evening class. Over the years the Club has grown and become one of the strongest in the country and the largest one in Leicestershire.

The Club's motif of fox's mask, whip and hunting horn reminds us that Quorn is famous not only for folk dancing but also for its ancient Fox Hunt.

Each year the Club arranges a number of public dances which are held locally when a well-known band and caller will be on stage.

During the year weekends away are organised when members participate in days of walking and evenings of dancing. Accommodation is arranged at hotels or guest houses. The walks are led by an experienced member. Also each month on the second Tuesday, a local Club walk is arranged which includes a stop for a pub lunch.

QFDC (Quorn Folk Dance Club) is a member of the EFDSS (English Folk Dance and Song Society)..

History of Folk Dancing

Probably every country has its own traditions of folk singing and dancing. The range is enormous and if you would like to enjoy some examples from around the world then go to one of the international folk festivals such as the one held each year in Sidmouth, Devon. Here in England our own rich heritage of song and dance is treasured and developed by the English Folk Dance and Song Society. Why not read more about folk dancing ...
